Coven News

I have happy news! Coven Pleiades will soon be adding a member. The young grandson of my silent but smiling room-mate Marisol has asked me to be his Magickal Teacher. I explained to him that I did not teach Magick in a vacuum, and I expected him to take seriously the Spiritual aspects of the teaching as well as the technical side. He would not get one of them from me without the other, and then must be progressing on all fronts to access more advanced techniques. He agreed, and we will see if he really understood. I gave him a little homework- to assemble notebook, journal , etc, for next class, I do not know when he will be Dedicated - but I want to make it soon- after he has seen my teaching style, and begins to grasp the magnitude of what he has asked of me, and what it will , in turn, require of him. The Mysteries protect themselves from the merely curious!
It occurs to me that my Uranus in 8th House Cancer is having its ' effect again. My stars predict that I will acquire my children in unusual ways. I adopted Rhys, and am now teaching from my hospital bed, the grandson of my fellow inmate!
My older child, the ineffable Rhys, will also be Dedicated soon. He is young, 16, but he has lived with Pagans all his life, sat at my feet while I taught, been in all sorts of Circles. I was hoping for around Yule, but scheduling problems intervened. Anyway, I am very happy to announce that Pleiades is growing - Thank the Goddess!

This essay makes a lucid, thoughtful point, though the cynical old joke about honest men to Washington and virgins ro whorehouses foes come to mind. Mr Obama doesn't have the luxury of too much time . I hope he uses his opportunities to make positive changes before the Honeymoon ends and the poison in the atmosphere erodes his image too much!

Speechless. Here's why.

The Promised Rant

I realize I've been doing a bit more posting than writing these last couple of days, but the truth is I've been speechless- with laughter about the guy who transformed into a goat, awe about the pink iguanas ans hive-mind jelly-fish and the sky- lights, rage about the young women who abused seniors in the 'home', and because i occasionally stop griping to eat and sleep;

You had to know, Gentle Reader, that, in-between, I had time to watch what goes on here and get royally pissed about something. Marisol is back, seems better, and even though I have had uninvited wanderers in my room twice, she was bagged and dragged away without too much fuss. What, you ask, is that B*tch griping about now? I am griping because I cannot rely on my weekly annoyances to keep to their own schedules- arrive on time and leave on time, so I can avoid them! The activities calendar stated that a Gospel Choir -6 ladies- 3old enough to live here, 3 young, scrubbed, and earnest, would sing at 1 PM on Wed. Now, I admit some of my grief is my own fault. I don't usually bother reading the activities calendar; I rely on habit- singing is Wednesday afternoon at 1;30- AVOID- Art Class is Tues. & Thurs AM, be there. They came early, and interrupted my short hour of pleasure at lunch-time with some impromptu hallelujahs and other such stuff. I am used to being bombarded by such noise, and wove my conversation between them. Michael understood, he was amused. But then, they started to sing! It was not yet one o'clock.
I could not be heard, could not hear. was lost in the crashing chords. As far away from heaven as this place is, I am sure they were heard! I am not strong enough to propel myself in the wheelchair, and my aide was not do to take me away until one- besides that, I had an obligation to the PT staff to do my daily walking exercising at one, or a little before. Naturally the day the screechers were early, my rescuers were late! After what seemed like forever , I was taken to the hallway where I nearly ran, so eager was I to escape the racket. Then I was allowed to seek the sanctum and peace and quiet of my cubicle.
Goddess! I do not wish to be disruptive- though I did LONG for my little cardboard horn! But, not all of us here are Christian- there are Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and one loud-mouthed Witch! Grrrrr! If they must come here to shout their Gospel, they could have the courtesy to do it within the parameters they set- so people who do not wish to be 'blessed' can get the hell out of there!!

OK, done griping- I am happy that I have this forum, and relieved that I have a quiet lunch time to look forward to, today. And, that's why I have been silent- I will exercise better discipline in the future. I will have some good news in next post- promise!

Health Update

This one is pretty short- both Marisol and I have changes to report. One of her daughters hearing from me how her cough was worsening, and sounding thicker (Hey, I'm a MOM ! I know what a worsening chest sounds like!)went to give a piece of her mind to the charge nurse- sweetheart who is no dummy- I dunno how she ended up here. An hour later, the EMT's arrived, and my friend was carted off for what I honestly feared was her last trip to the hospital. Tonight, she was back- and her daughter tells me that she had nearly died from the infections that made her so miserable that, mute as she is, and thick - headed that I am, I knew it.
I promised her family I would keep on looking out for her, and I will.
I went to the doctor;s appointment yesterday. The neurologist says that there is nothing to be done fr my failing concentration, It is caused by the tumor, and that is inoperable, and even if it were operable all their padding about inside my skull has probably messed thing up beyond repair. I did not expect any different to tell the truth. The neurosurgeon who saw me in the acute care hospital in September saw some thickening in my meninges between one MRI and another, so she wants another MRI to see if there are more changes. I asked her if I was growing a new tumor, and she said "No",with no hesitation at all. I wish I knew what it was then, and if we are talking at cross-purposes because this is a 'thickening' and NOT a 'tumor', but it is bad news whatever one may wish to call it. I will know in a month or so. She has added phenobarbital to my meds, and is thinking about lessening the Dilantin, pending lab results. She thinks the blisters are caused by the swelling, but it's possible they are caused by the Dilantin. If anyone asks me, I will say I would rather keep the blisters and have fewer seizures.
I am doggedly pursuing walking without a walker whenever I can. My distances are still pathetic but getting longer.

Weirder than you think

Eight Candles Burning - a knol by Jomil Mulvey

An essay I wrote about the Eight Festivals. Itis intended for the interested Beginner, but I think (hope) everyone who reads it will find some useful information herein!

Eight Candles Burning - a knol by Jomil Mulvey

Monday Morning Triumphs &Tragedies

I am sitting here torn as usual between jubilation and misery, so I will give you, Gentle Reader, the benefit of both.

Triumphs first! I walked again! I took the bit between my teeth and suggested to the PT that I could walk without a walker, just holding her arm, and I DID! I walked across the dining room and back to Michael's table! Sure, I staggered and slid, and almost fell on my hinder parts several times, but I walked!

Flushed with triumph I tried it again yesterday, and managed to the bathroom and back. I may get out of this thrice - damned diaper yet! I will continue to insist on trying, and practice on the walker only as much as I have to. I am determined to increase my walking skills- who knows. I may be able to walk unaided at some point -Escucheme, Diosa!

I am not sure this qualifies as a triumph yet. but it is a "sight of land'. I have been asked to serve (unofficially) on the Communications and PR Committee of my Union! I will be responsible for organizing and being contributing Editor of the Union's Blog - with an eye to improving/increasing our presence on the Web. I am overwhelmed that they asked me and eager to get started. Look out world! We are IN the building, and the roof is gonna rise! I will keep y'all up to date as this unfolds. Thank you, wonderful DH for mentioning me at just the perfect time!

This is not strictly my triumph at all- merely a side-note about how weird the world really is. Wednesday, I got offline and the phone rang. It happens a lot these days- usually wrong number. This one wasn't. It was from a woman who had just come upon an ad I had placed 10 years ago, looking for members of DH's family from Germany. It turns out she is the grand - daughter of one of his grandmother's brothers who stayed in Germany when she left. Some political issues with an upstart paper-hanger, apparently.

We are going to exchange photos and keep in touch. I am SO glad that I am filling in some of the blanks in DH's family tree. It gives me hope for my own.

Last on my list of personal stories is an entry in the 'world is amazingly small' file. We were talking about money the other day, when Michael told me the Ritziest Hotel he had ever stayed in was a La Quinta. I was floored. Both my Dad and Mom had worked at the La Quinta he described, and the last, epic spat between my dad and my 1st step-mother had taken place in that dining-room! When she was kidnapped, it was from that very parking lot she disappeared!! I jokingly asked him if his dinner had been interrupted by a screaming match between a trashy blonds and a short, gravelly-voiced sailor... Of course not, but I wouldn't have been too surprised had he said yes!

Tragedies....(SIGH) Someone stole my New Year's Horn, I was saving it for occasions when I needed it - when unannounced lunch-time "entertainers" need a little accompaniment. I am really pissed, and want DH to buy me a whole sack of them at the party store. I need those horns!! !!TOOT!!

Across the aisle from us, in the dining room, is a gentleman who is rather deaf, and unresponsive to the World in general except when he has a nicotine fit - then his whole demeanor changes- he goes from silent drooling to LOUD, wailing like a foghorn or a lonely bull out in the pasture- "Hey, Jo-sieee!, Hey, Jo-sieee!" this went on for well over an hour yesterday, and left me aching between wanting to slaughter him and put all of us out of our misery, and sympathy- it was allowed to go on far too long until someone moved him out into the hall where he had fewer people to annoy. It did make me grateful I had never gotten the habit- but, Jeez! Why not detail somebody to distract and calm him when they see him heating up- an hour plus was just plain too long.

I want all my friends to know that even though I was tempted, I was not a brat with my little paper horn. I only blew it once- that toot startled a white Cocatiel which is the pet of one of the residents, setting it off in terrified squawks and flapping around. I was worried for the poor bird, but I did begin to think- why was she allowed to keep a bird, and I was not allowed to keep my doggie? Dogs can be house-trained, and birds can't, and if doggie does happen to let fly, it isn't from 10 feet overhead!

The last two entries under tragedies are smaller instances of the big thing that is WRONG with this place. Remember Billie? The woman with the stuffed animal fetish? Like a three year-old, everything she gets her hands on is "Mine". This causes trouble nearly every day, as she appropriates art supplies, other people's animals, and just 'stuff', One of the servers in the dining room took Billie's tray away before she was finished with it, maybe trying to forestall another fork incident. Billie went ballistic- growling, babbling, shouting and huffing angrily- and they wouldn't give her tray back, as simple as that seems. I am aware there were probably health issues about giving her back dirty plates, but Goddess! She was the one who had dirtied them! She would have been placated, and forgotten the whole incident in 5 minutes had the staff not ignored her. As it was ,she carried on and carried on, and drove herself into such a swivet she had to be taken into the hall where her sobs continurd another 20 minutes. There I was again, torn between wanting to throttle her for behaving like my daughter didn't DARE behave after age 2, and feeling sorry that she suffered so much over such a silly rule.

The other example of what I call the 'don;t give a good Goddamn' syndrome' involves one of my room-mates. I'll call her Marisol. Marisol; is a sweetheart. She cannot speak, bur she can smile, and she obviously loves all 12 of her children. Lately, I have noticed she has a problem, a thick strangled cough that keeps her and me up all night. Her daughter and I are worried and have mentioned several times that her cough is bad, worsening, etc, and gotten no response from the staff, They claim the doc will not order any effective medications, no x-rays, Nada. This probably true. I think she needs a different doctor.

A little more dreamin'

What to add today? well. while I am telling stories on myself, I will have to add that while he was bent and studiously doing battle with the much handled record album and the recalcitrant pen (I can spell that, but couldn't say it to save my life!) , I fought and won a battle with the impulse to touch his silky fine hair- just a carress- it would have been sooooo beautiful, but might have been misunderstood as something different from the simple greedy adoration it was. So, I did not touch, even "accidentally". and I still wonder, now and then... But, I am MOSTLY glad I didn't.
I am going to have lunch with my friend today, and I have not got too much to tell him. I am his source for information-like a daily Gazette- what is interesting on the web, who we are at war with today, what the idiot in the Oval Office said... Today, I have been exploring, and not collecting much of note to bring to him. What he brings to me is infinitely more precious. Like this magic box, he brings me connection, the feeling that despite everything, I am heard.
All of you who take the time to drop me a line, please know that you are appreciated! I feel like I am throwing out messages in a botle, and when someone bothers to tell me they have heard me... Well. you make it all much easier to bear!

Living the Dream

I had been dreamin' for years...

I mean, really! I fell madly in love with this short, irritable, gorgeous Scottish actor when I was not quite 14, and there I was, in my 50's, getting ready to attend a movie premiere he was slated to attend! I had been unbelieving when I heard it- a friend online casually mentioned a little Indie film festival in L.A. and a rumor that Mr. Mc Callum was supposed to be attending.

My long-suffering DH allowed as how he didn't mind the trip: we could visit some relatives of his in Los Alamitos, too, and they'd even watch the kids for the evening.
We dropped off the kids, drove into Hollywood, and joined the crowd milling in front of the theatre. I was clutching a much -loved copy of one of his records from the 60's ; the one with the poster of him inside. I had held onto it for 30+ years, and it was a little worn, but the photo on the front was still beautiful. I had a Sharpie clipped o on corner, In case I was lucky enough to get an autograph, I wanted to be ready.
There was a stir in the crowd as some limos drove up, but they were only Glenn Close and William Hurt. I was just moaning to DH that my sources in New York must have been misinformed when there was another stir.
Ellen had warned me that he moves fast, an he does! he was taking the steps two at a time and clearly meant business as he strode into the crowd. At his side was a lovely, tall lady in green, whom I took to be his co-star.
"M M Mr. MC Callum".I stammered,"May I have your autograph?"
"Ye ..ah" he replied doubtfully. I don't think he expected to be asked. His movie hadn't gotten much press and he may not know how extensive and watchful his fan-base is. I swear, if the man turns over in his sleep, someone knows and emails go out! I put my precious album into his outstretched hand and froze. My pen was gone! It must have been knocked off in the milling throng! I looked all around and could not see it, "I'm sorry-my pen..."
He made a tiny impatient noise,"tsk", and waved away the apology. Then, he looked at his companion."Do you have a pen?" He looked at a man he knew - "Do you?" I stood rooted. He was actually working the crowd, asking among his entire entourage for a pen so he wouldn't have to disappoint me! Lemme tell you, there is a reason that he has fans of 40+ years' vintage!
At length.a pen appeared, and he began to sign. The pen stuck and dragged on the album and finally would not write. He made the little 'tsk' again and I tried to pull the album back. He held on. He had started to sign and by God. he would do it! I quickly realized tat I was not getting my treasure back until it was signed to his satisfaction, and rather than engage in an undignified struggle I was sure to lose, I stopped tugging on the album. He 'tsk' ed a third time. "I'll sign it," he said, but, you have to turn it over. This paper is just notorious."
Numbly , I let him turn it over. One of his friends looked over my shoulder at the picture on the front. "You don't look like that any more."
Mr. McCallum ignored me as I tried to protest that he hadn't changed. He had, of course, but still he is so gorgeous it ought to be illegal, and those eyes, the color of new denim can still pin me flat as a bug on a blotter!
As he was signing, he kept frowning, and looking at me. I didn't know why, and was really scared that I had pissed him off by losing my pen and all. He released the album at last and cut through my murmured thanks . "I haven't seen you in a very long time", he said.
I was struck mute. He had never seen me before- how could I answer? I couldn't tell him he was wrong! Desperately praying that he liked whoever he thought I was, I summoned my best smile. "Why, no, you haven't", I said, and slipped back into the crowd, clutching my album tightly. Safely hidden in the mob, I trembled, and the tears came.
A young woman I had been talking to earlier looked at me curiously. "Wow, It really means a lot to you, Is he a musician or something?"
"Sort of". I said "a long time ago."
The movie wasn't anything to write home about, but I was so buzzed from meeting him that it could have been about anything. When it was over , I sought him out like a polite child paying respects after a party, and said something stupid like "It was a beautiful film." He snorted a little, but shook my hand politely. I swear my skin remembers his grip! It was careful, gentle- nothing to prove. I noticed then the only sign of our advancing age. The skin of his palm was a little papery and dry, but his handshake was warm, frank, and strong.
If dreams are going to come true, this is how to do it. It was a moment of magic with just enough mystery. It confirmed what everyone has been telling me- Mr. Mc Callum is a real gent, and concerned about his fans. And, I have a memory that will last the rest of my life. Now, if I only knew who he thought I was!

My World and Welcome(Back, Again) to It

Lunch-time with Michael (and Billy)

I have lunch with Michael every day. He is a real find here at the funny farm;a gentleman of wit, refinement and candor who can hold a conversation in English, and doesn't mind sharing his table with me. I met him through a friend who has since been lucky enough to go home. I used to watch them from across the room, smiling, laughing, conversing, and just fry with envy. At the time , I was seated alone when I came to the dining room, which wasn't often. Then, Laura went home, and I asked permission to change my seat to the table Michael occupied. He kindly welcomed me, and my pleasant chats with this civilized, good-natured, gentleman has become a feature in my grey existence.
Most of the gentlemen here are demented or don't speak enough English or Spanish, or simply are not able hold a conversation. I live in solitary confinement except for Lunch hour and when I go to an Art Class or a Doctor's appointment.
So it is that this hour a day is precious to me. So precious, in fact that I am especially irritated when one of my fellow residents decides to be obstreperous and ruin my sole opportunity for a little relief!
Take the other day, for example. The hoopla of the Christian Holidays was mostly over, though the same old CD of some tenor wracking his throat to holler about the Joy he wished to inflict on the world was still being played. I was talking to Michael about an item I had picked up surfing the Web, when my eye wandered across the room toward a woman, (I'll call her Billy) who is in my Art Class. She is known for carrying a stuffed animal with her everywhere, and sure enough, a white fuzzy ball of fake fur was on her lap as usual. What was NOT as usual was what she was doing to the poor thing's behind with a fork! I was so aghast I missed what my friend was saying. EWWW! It went on and on and on.
I finally asked a worker to ask her to perform her unnatural acts on plush animals in a less public venue. There are few standards of behavior in the dining room, but I think this was just a tad too lenient! She sulked the rest of the hour, but stopped molesting Fluffy, and I was able to listen to my friend in peace. Every now and then Billy gets really crazy. and then the fur flies!
Yesterday, she came to Art class, without Fluffy, but could not be persuaded to use to ink, brush , and paper provided as required by the class. She got brushes full of ink, and was painting all right, or daubing, on the mat used to protect the table from spills. She would grunt rhythmically as she did this, punctuating this with kicks to the base of her table-uh-uheh-uh-eh *THUD*,uh-eh-uh-uh-*thud*! This was a bit distracting, but I did not have to ask for someone to stop her this time. The teacher, and some aides intervened, and she was soon settled down with crayons and a coloring book page. I think she was probably frustrated because our Teacher had given us some calligraphy to copy, instead of the usual nature pictures. Whatever the reason for her behavior, it cast a pall over the class.
Still some good news came out of all the annoyance! Teacher told me that tomorrow we will have our own tiny Art Show, since our first efforts in that direction, a local Fair and a small presentation in the park, were such a great success.
I have 4 pieces in the show, and I am really thrilled. I can draw!! I never would have guessed! I never imagined I could, but I was curious, went to one of Teacher's classes, and WOW! There is no holding me back now- I am working on creating a CD of my work which I will eventually offer for sale. My teacher has already asked for one to give as a gift to HER teacher!
I am working on a set-up now that will permit the use of my laptop as an input device for the BIG TV in the dining room for her whiteboard demonstrations.
I am leaving foe my afternoon activities in a few moments- more slices of life on the funny-farm when I get back!

My World and Welcome (Back) to It

Lemme Tell ya, Folks, I was SOOOO scared!

A little background, to set this up- when I was young, and more foolish, I was the victim -survived several sexual attacks. Before I came to hospital. I was anxious to the point i would beg DH to stay home from work any time a strange man was expected- plumber, cable guy, whatever. I could not stand being alone in the house with a strange man. I tell you that so you will get why I was so scared last night when a resident I had never met before crept stealthily into my room.

He was in a wheelchair, and. in other circumstances might have looked comical, cr-e-e-e-eping into my room. But, it was in the dead of night, and I had been sound asleep, so I started awake. Having been "Visited" a few times before by residents who had gotten confused and gone wandering, I assumed this was his problem and told him several times, in various degrees of politeness vs. anxiety and irritation, that he had come to the wrong room. All the while I was pressing the call button to summon aid.

I tried a couple of times telling him as nicely as I could that he was in the wrong room. It's hard to sneak in a wheelchair but he did it - cr e-e-e-eping along the floor. .He whispered in a dry gravelly voice "Call the police!"

"What what what??", I stammered. ."Why?"

"Call the police!", he repeated creeping closer, and starting to fumble with the privacy curtains that surround my bed.

I pressed the Nurse call button again, harder, as anxiety won out over politesse. OPEN the Curtain! !" , I shouted! He had nearly gotten them closed. He pulled them open again. "Now, I was an operator (true), I can help you with the cops. . Why am I calling them?"

"mumble, room mate mumble mumble"

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a CNA dawdling along in the hallway, apparently in answer to my summons. "HELP!" I shouted as loud as I could. "Please, Goddess please, help me!"

The CNA came in and dragged his chair away while he muttered incoherently and tried to scratch her hands away. Suddenly, the room was lit, and several people came in. I told the whole story, emphasizing that he did not hurt me. At the same Time I was thinking that if he had wanted to hurt me I would have been very dead, and wondering what about his room mate made him so desperate to call the cops. Was he dead or something?

The Med Nurse came in just as I was calling my DH to tell him what happened , and suggested strongly that he should call the Admin guy since I doubted he would ever hear about it from staff. She asked me if I was hurt, and what the man had said to me. I repeated the story she had just heard me tell my DH. She looked at me like I had two heads. "He said 'room mate'? He doesn't speak English. He only talks Spanish to us."

"He spoke it to me.", I repeated firmly. "He said 'room mate', clear as a bell. I couldn't hear what about him, though."

She continued to look at me as if I was the crazy one. After a little while, she left, and I spent the rest of the night alone except for a CNA camped outside my room on a folding chair - presumably to discourage other late-night visitors. This morning, I hear from the morning Med Nurse that the man in question DOES speak English. Sometimes. To a select few. Apparently, he doesn't cotton to the Phillipinas on the staff. Here I am victim once again to racism, and it isn't MY race that's the problem!

Annnnyway, I am surviving this morning, hoping I will get to see Admin Guy who may be taking today off to recover. I wish i could!
